Gravity Points Down

Physical Science β€” Forces & Motion | Unit 1, Lesson 2 of 6

πŸ“š Grade: 5th Grade⏱️ Duration: 45–60 minutesπŸ”¬ Subject: Physical Science β€” Forces & Motion
πŸŽβ¬‡οΈ
No matter the object, gravity pulls toward Earth.
πŸ“‹ NGSS Standard:
5-PS2-1 β€” Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.

🎯 Learning Objective

Students will gather evidence that gravity pulls objects toward Earth.

πŸ’‘ The Big Idea

Earth’s gravity always pulls objects downward, even when the objects start from different heights or positions.

πŸ”¬ The Science

Science Snapshot
support removed or object releasedgravity pulls downwardmotion changesobject falls or curves down
Gravity acts downward throughout the motion, even when an object is briefly moving upward.

What is happening?

Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward Earth. Near Earth’s surface, that pull acts downward no matter which direction an object is moving at the moment.

Why it works that way

Gravity matters because it constantly affects falling, jumping, rolling downhill, and the curved paths of moving objects. Other forces can oppose gravity, but gravity continues to act even when something is also being pushed or supported.

Look for this in the lesson

Students should distinguish motion direction from force direction. A ball tossed upward is moving up for a moment, but gravity is still pulling it down the whole time.

Ask while you read: What is the difference between the direction an object moves and the direction gravity pulls?

πŸ§ͺ Investigation

Step 1 β€” Predict the direction (5 min)
Ask students to point the direction gravity pulls.
Step 2 β€” Drop two objects (10 min)
Drop two safe objects from the same height and watch what happens.
Step 3 β€” Roll then fall (10 min)
Roll an object off a table or ramp safely and observe that it still falls down.
Step 4 β€” Record evidence (10 min)
Students write what they saw in each test.
Step 5 β€” Support the argument (10 min)
Students explain how the evidence shows gravity is directed down.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Questions

What direction did the objects move because of gravity? They moved downward toward Earth.
Did the shape of the object change the direction of gravity? No β€” gravity still pulled down.
How does a rolling object still show gravity? It can move forward and downward at the same time.

πŸš€ Extensions

Extension: Try dropping light and heavy safe objects from the same height and compare what is the same about the direction.

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« Parent/Teacher Notes

Teaching move: Students do not need advanced math here. Focus on the direction of the force and the observable pattern.

Safety: Use only safe household objects and keep feet clear.
