Modeling Matter in an Ecosystem

Life Science โ€” Ecosystems & Food Webs | Unit 1, Lesson 6 of 6

๐Ÿ“š Grade: 5th Gradeโฑ๏ธ Duration: 45โ€“60 minutes๐Ÿ”ฌ Subject: Life Science โ€” Ecosystems & Food Webs
๐Ÿ”„๐ŸŒฑ
Matter cycles through producers, consumers, decomposers, and the environment.
๐Ÿ“‹ NGSS Standard:
5-LS2-1 โ€” Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.

๐ŸŽฏ Learning Objective

Students will build a model showing how matter moves among producers, consumers, decomposers, and the environment.

๐Ÿ’ก The Big Idea

Matter keeps cycling through ecosystems, moving from the environment into living things and back again.

๐Ÿ”ฌ The Science

Science Snapshot
environmental matterplants build biomassanimals + wastedecomposers return matter
A matter model tracks where materials go, not just which organism eats another.

What is happening?

A matter model shows that atoms and materials are conserved and move among organisms and the environment. Carbon, water, and nutrients can change form and location, but they do not simply disappear.

Why it works that way

Plants take in matter from air, water, and soil. Animals get matter by eating plants or other animals. Decomposers return matter to the environment. A strong model keeps that recycling visible instead of showing only โ€œwho eats whom.โ€

Look for this in the lesson

Students should use arrows to show movement of matter into, through, and out of organisms. Labels such as air, soil, water, waste, and decomposers make the model more scientifically useful.

Ask while you read: Does your model show matter returning to the environment as well as moving into organisms?

๐Ÿ“ฆ Materials

๐Ÿ  Household Items to Gather

๐Ÿ“‹ Printables

๐Ÿงช Modeling Challenge

Step 1 โ€” Gather the parts (5 min)
Include a producer, one or more consumers, a decomposer, and the environment.
Step 2 โ€” Add arrows for matter movement (10 min)
Show where matter goes when organisms eat, grow, die, and decompose.
Step 3 โ€” Label each part (10 min)
Students label the role of each organism or part.
Step 4 โ€” Explain the cycle (10 min)
Describe how matter returns to the environment.
Step 5 โ€” Revise for clarity (10 min)
Improve the model so the cycle is easy to follow.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Questions

How is matter different from energy in a model?Matter cycles through the system; energy flows through it.
Why must decomposers be included? They return matter to the environment.
What makes a model clear and useful?Correct arrows, labels, and an explanation that matches the science.

๐Ÿš€ Extensions

Extension: Use a different ecosystem, such as ocean or desert, and rebuild the matter model there.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Parent/Teacher Notes

Teaching move: It is okay if students still mix energy and matter at first. Use the model to help separate those ideas.

Sample Explanation

Matter moves from the environment into producers, then into consumers, and finally back to the environment through waste and decomposition.
