Grade 5 Earth & Space Science β Water on Earth Systems | Unit 1, Lesson 5 of 6
π Grade: 5th Gradeβ±οΈ Duration: 45β60 minutesπ¬ Subject: Earth & Space Science β Water on Earth Systems
π¦οΈππ±
Water connects Earthβs air, land, water, and living things.
π NGSS Standard: 5-ESS2-1 β Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
π― Learning Objective
Students will identify how Earthβs spheres interact through water movement.
π‘ The Big Idea
Water links Earthβs systems: the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.
π¬ The Science
Science Snapshot
Atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere constantly exchange water and influence one another.
What is happening?
Earthβs water does not move through the atmosphere, land, oceans, and living things separately. Those systems interact all the time, so a change in one part can affect the others.
Why it works that way
For example, mountains shape rainfall patterns, plants slow runoff and return water vapor to the air, and oceans store heat that affects weather. Scientists study these linked systems because Earth works through many connected causes, not isolated events.
Look for this in the lesson
Students should practice seeing one event from several angles: where the water is, what land it moves over, what the weather is doing, and how living things change the pathway. That systems thinking is the heart of the lesson.
Ask while you read: If one Earth system changes, which other systems might respond?

π§ͺ Investigation
Step 1 β Name the spheres (5β10 min) Review what belongs in each Earth system.
Step 2 β Follow one water story (10 min) Example: rain falls on soil, soaks in, and is taken up by a plant.
Step 3 β Label each interaction (10 min) Students identify which systems are connected in each step.
Step 4 β Build a systems map (10 min) Draw a diagram with arrows between the spheres.
Step 5 β Explain why water is the connector (10 min) Use the map to explain how the spheres depend on one another.
π¬ Discussion Questions
What is one example of water connecting the atmosphere and geosphere?Rain falling onto land.
How can water connect the geosphere and biosphere?Plants can take up water from soil.
Why are Earth systems better understood together? The systems affect one another, not just themselves.
π Extensions
Extension: Describe a local example, such as a puddle, river, snowpack, or garden, using all four Earth systems.
π PARENT ANSWER KEY β Detach before giving worksheet to students
Sample Thinking
Rain in the atmosphere falls onto geosphere land, becomes water in the hydrosphere, and is used by plants in the biosphere.
β What Success Looks Like
Student names the Earth systems accurately.
Student includes water as the connector.
Student explains at least one interaction clearly.
