Grade 5 Earth & Space Science β Water on Earth Systems | Unit 1, Lesson 3 of 6
π Grade: 5th Gradeβ±οΈ Duration: 45β60 minutesπ¬ Subject: Earth & Space Science β Water on Earth Systems
βοΈπ§οΈ
Water returns from the atmosphere and collects in many places.
π NGSS Standard: 5-ESS2-1 β Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
π― Learning Objective
Students will explain how condensed water can return to Earth as precipitation and collect in different reservoirs.
π‘ The Big Idea
Water that condenses in the atmosphere can return to Earth and collect in oceans, lakes, rivers, soil, or living things.
π¬ The Science
Science Snapshot
When water falls from the atmosphere, it can collect in many different places before moving on again.
What is happening?
Precipitation happens when condensed droplets or ice crystals in clouds become large enough to fall to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Collection happens when that water gathers in oceans, lakes, rivers, puddles, soil, or snowpack.
Why it works that way
Gravity pulls precipitation downward, but where the water ends up depends on temperature, land shape, and surface type. Some water collects quickly in streams, some soaks in, and some is stored for a long time as snow or ice.
Look for this in the lesson
Students should see precipitation as one step in a larger system, not the end of the story. After water falls, scientists ask where it gathers, how long it stays there, and what conditions might move it again.
Ask while you read: After rain or snow falls, where might that water go next?

π§ͺ Investigation
Step 1 β Identify precipitation types (5 min) Sort examples into rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Step 2 β Trace where water lands (10 min) Use a diagram or map to see where falling water collects.
Step 3 β Compare reservoirs (10 min) Discuss how water can collect in oceans, lakes, rivers, soil, or organisms.
Step 4 β Model the path (10 min) Students draw a water path from atmosphere to collection.
Step 5 β Explain the system connection (10 min) Discuss which Earth systems are interacting.
π¬ Discussion Questions
What is precipitation?Water that falls from the atmosphere to Earth.
Where can water collect after precipitation? In oceans, lakes, rivers, soil, groundwater, or living things.
Why does this show a connected system?Water moves among atmosphere, land, and living things.
π Extensions
Extension: Track one rainy day and list every place you noticed water collect afterward.
π PARENT ANSWER KEY β Detach before giving worksheet to students
Sample Explanation
Water condensed in the atmosphere, fell as rain, and then collected in a river or soaked into the ground.
β What Success Looks Like
Student identifies precipitation correctly.
Student includes a real collection reservoir.
Student connects atmosphere and surface Earth.
