Plant Life Cycles and Seeds

Life Science β€” Life Cycles | Unit 1, Lesson 3 of 6

πŸ“š Grade: 3rd Grade ⏱️ Duration: 45–60 minutes πŸ”¬ Subject: Life Science β€” Life Cycles
🌱🌼🫘
Seeds, seedlings, flowers, and new seeds show a plant life cycle in motion.
πŸ“‹ NGSS Standard:
3-LS1-1 β€” Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death.

🎯 Learning Objective

Students will model a plant life cycle and explain where birth, growth, reproduction, and death appear in that model.

πŸ’‘ The Big Idea

Plants may look different from animals, but they still follow the same big pattern of birth, growth, reproduction, and death. A seed begins life, a seedling grows, a mature plant reproduces by making new seeds, and the cycle can begin again.

πŸ”¬ The Science

Science Snapshot
seedseedlingadult plantflowers / seeds
A plant life cycle shows how a seed can become a plant that produces new seeds.

What is happening?

Plant life cycles include stages such as seed, seedling, adult plant, flower, fruit, and new seeds. The exact timing varies, but the major scientific idea is that plants make offspring through seeds or other reproductive structures.

Why it works that way

Seeds protect the embryo and often store food for early growth. Flowers and fruits help with pollination, protection, and dispersal, which increases the chance that the next generation can grow successfully.

Look for this in the lesson

Students should connect each plant stage to a job, such as germination, growth, flowering, or seed making. That helps the cycle feel meaningful rather than like a list to memorize.

Ask while you read: Which stage in the plant cycle helps begin the next generation, and how?

Let's Get Started

Step 1 β€” Reconnect to the unit pattern (5 min)
Review birth, growth, reproduction, and death from Lessons 1 and 2.
Step 2 β€” Observe a seed and make a claim (8 min)
Ask why a tiny seed counts as the beginning of a plant life cycle.
Step 3 β€” Build the plant model (12 min)
Walk through seed β†’ seedling β†’ mature plant β†’ flower or seed pod β†’ new seeds.
Step 4 β€” Compare plants to animals (10 min)
Compare a bean plant to one familiar animal from earlier lessons.
Step 5 β€” Explain with evidence (10 min)
Use the worksheet to explain how the plant model proves plants have life cycles too.

Discussion Questions

Why does a seed count as the beginning of a plant life cycle?Look for answers like: the new plant begins inside the seed, so the seed is part of birth and the start of growth.
How is a plant life cycle the same as an animal life cycle? They might say both begin life, grow, reproduce, and die, even though the stages look different.
Where do you see reproduction in a plant life cycle?Look for flowers, cones, fruit, or seed pods making new seeds that can become new plants.
Why do scientists use models for plant life cycles? They might say models help us see the order of stages and explain how one stage leads to the next.
What would happen if a plant never made seeds?Students may say the cycle could not begin again for a new plant of the same kind.

Extensions

Try one more plant: Add a second plant, such as a sunflower, pumpkin, or pine tree, and compare how its life cycle stages look similar and different.

Family challenge: Plant a bean seed and keep a short observation journal.

Parent/Teacher Notes

Teaching move: Keep returning to the idea that making seeds is how many plants reproduce.

Important misconception to catch: Some students think seeds are just β€œplant crumbs.” Emphasize that a seed is the beginning of a new organism.

3️⃣ Use Your Model as Evidence

Use your model as evidence. Be sure to name where birth, growth, reproduction, and death appear in the plant life cycle.

4️⃣ Compare a Plant and an Animal

Explain one way both organisms match the same big pattern and one way the plant is different.

1️⃣ Put the Plant Life Cycle in Order β€” Sample Acceptable Answers

Accept seed β†’ seedling/sprout β†’ young or mature plant β†’ flower/pod/cone β†’ new seeds.

2️⃣ Show the Big Pattern in a Plant β€” Sample Ideas

3️⃣ Use Your Model as Evidence β€” Model Response

β€œMy model shows that a bean plant begins as a seed, grows into a larger plant, makes new seeds, and dies. That is evidence that plants have life cycles too.”

4️⃣ Compare a Plant and an Animal β€” Sample Ideas

Same: both begin life, grow, reproduce, and die.
Different: a plant begins as a seed and reproduces by making new seeds, while many animals begin in eggs or are born live.
